Vitamin C and Birth Control Pills

vitamin-c-and-birth-control-pills-headerTaking birth control has some nutritional drawbacks.

Today, a large portion of women are taking some form of contraceptive to prevent unplanned pregnancies. The birth control pill is still one of the most popular contraceptives on the market today. Since its introduction to women decades ago, "the pill" as it has become known, has been an inspiration to the modern woman allowing her to choose the best time in her life to become pregnant. However, women should be aware of vitamin deficiencies caused by the pill - including vitamin C.

Vitamin C and Birth Control Pills - How They Interact

The modern birth control pill is taken daily, as in years past, and contains hormones that replace a woman's natural hormones and mimic pregnancy in her system, thereby tricking the body into appearing to be pregnant.

This means that the feedback loop that would normally cause a ready egg to present will not, thereby working to prevent pregnancy. The two most common hormones found in a "pill" are a combination of estrogen and progesterone. This combination prevents a woman from ovulating during her monthly cycle. It is this combination, however, of hormones that can lead to many different vitamin deficiencies caused by the pill, including a substantial deficiency in vitamin C. Taking vitamin C and birth control pills will bring about new habits for your nutritional intake!

Vitamin C's effect on birth control pills is really twofold considering that the hormones contained in the pill decrease a woman's vitamin C level. Therefore, it's important to be aware and to adjust for the interactions that vitamin C and birth control pills bring about. It has been recommended by both researchers and physicians alike that women taking the pill should not only take a good multi-vitamin, but also 1000 milligrams of vitamin C daily.

This will prevent mood swings, nausea, and even spotting in some women along with increasing the overall effectiveness of the pill to prevent pregnancy. While this dose does not cause most women any problems, some do experience spotting. If that should occur, lower your dose of vitamin C to 100 milligrams daily. It is also important to note that women taking more than 100 milligrams of vitamin C should take it at least four hours before or after taking their birth control pills.

Vitamin C has many traits that can improve a woman's health from boosting the immune system to improving brain function. More importantly, vitamin C's effect on birth control pills not only increase their effectiveness in preventing pregnancy, but also help balance a woman's body chemistry that gets distorted while on the pill. There have been numerous studies done on the benefits of vitamin C, and they have collectively found that it is one of an individual's most important vitamins for ensuring a person's overall health. It is important to remember to always consult a qualified physician before starting any new regiment.
