There's something about certain things that just remind you of summer. For instance, when you slice a garden tomato that's still warm from the sun, or eat juicy raspberries by the handful, the scents and flavors remind you what is so wonderful about those long, hot summer days.

And perhaps the most iconic fruit of summer is the juicy watermelon. And it's not only delicious, it's wonderful for you as well! Watermelon is full of anti-oxidant vitamins A and C and is a good source of potassium and trace minerals, all for around forty-five calories per serving. With health benefits like these coupled with a natural sweetness, it's no wonder that watermelon is a perpetual summer favorite.

Watermelon Recipes

Watermelon, with its high liquid content, is a natural choice for summer beverages. Watermelon coolers, watermelon margaritas, spiked watermelon and watermelon smoothies are all popular choices for summer entertaining.

However, perhaps the simplest way to add some adult kick to watermelon is to spike it. Spiked watermelon is an easy and memorable addition to any summer party. Simply cut a small hole in the top of a large watermelon and insert a funnel. Pour in a fifth of vodka, rum, or tequila slowly and let the alcohol absorb into the melon one to two cups at a time. It may take several hours or even a full day for the melon to absorb all the alcohol, but rest assured it will happen. Slice the melon and serve as usual, but be careful to keep kids away!

If a spiked watermelon seems a little low brow for your tastes, try one of these delicious and sophisticated summer watermelon drinks for all ages.
