Wedding Registry: Should I Register For China?

Should-I-Register-For-ChinaMany brides and grooms struggle with the question, “Should I register for china?” In fact, I personally get asked that question by several of my brides. It’s a great question. It is one I asked myself five years ago as I was registering for my wedding. I had made up my mind that I didn’t want or need china. In my mind, I didn’t see it as practical or even something I wanted my wedding guests to spend money on. After my mom highly suggested I change my mind, I did. I registered for the china. To this day, it’s my favorite wedding present we received.

Is It Practical?

Yes, of course it is practical, but it may take time. I suggest registering for everyday plates and china. For four years, my china sat displayed and unused I longed for the day when I could use it for a fabulous dinner party or a fancy lunch with the girls. It took time for my husband and I to really settle in and find our niche as we learned to entertain as a married couple. We are now in the business of entertaining, so we are finally able to use the beautiful china that was given to us. I always tell brides you may not use your china right away and that’s okay.

Space can be another issue. My husband and I inherited a china cabinet from my grandmother. I displayed my china in that cabinet until our third move, then, it had to go. I was done with the bulky cabinet. Still wishing to display my china, we bought shelving and displayed it that way. We saved a ton of space and were still able to enjoy our china.  It is often said that china is the one present you will not buy yourself. For the most part, I believe it to be true. Some say, “I would rather my guests spend money on other items we want. China is so expensive.” Honestly, it is shocking and humbling how much the people in your life want to shower you with wedding gifts. When registering, you are usually instructed to register for everything you want. There is a great chance you will probably get it. So, if you are trying to decide if you should register for the china or the LED flat screen…register for both!

I’m A Modern Girl

Sometimes when we think of china, we automatically think of our mother’s or grandmother’s china. Yes, it may be beautiful, but a little dated perhaps. This was a mindset I was in and when I actually looked at the different patterns, styles, and colors, I changed my view. There are so many options to suit every style, lifestyle, and personality. Think of it as an investment. Someday, you may have children and grand children of your own who may find value and beauty in the china you have. Try to think ahead (as much as you can) as you make your decision.

All in all, you have to do what’s right for you. You know your lifestyle and what works. I have grown more and more attached to my china since we received it and it serves a great purpose for us. It is not something I use everyday. It gives me such excitement and pride to be able to use it to serve my friends and family on special occasions. It reminds me that I love to cook and entertain. And after 5 years, I’m so grateful I listened to my mom.
