Unusual Skin Blemishing and Spots are Very Rarely Cancerous
Like all parts of the body, there are many different anomalies that sometimes appear on the skin surface which cause people a great deal of concern. Some even take the spots for being indicators of having cancer. When fear becomes obsession for sufferers that endlessly worry about contracting the dreaded C-word, this is actually a known condition called Dermatopatho-phobia. It basically means that a person has an abnormal fear of contracting a skin disease and includes symptoms similar to an anxiety attack.
What Could White Spots on Your Skin Mean?
Many skin diseases turn out to be symptoms of various disorders, like infectious diseases or parasitism. Of course skin disorders such as pimples and blemishes are very common and effect most teenagers during puberty. Dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis are also widespread skin disorders that effect scores of the world's population. Blemishes of the skin, often even unusual looking, are quite common and often cause no real harm other than a mild inconvenience that can be treated easily. Many white moles, blemishes or marks don't itch, hurt or cause any irritation at all, but they are quite noticeable especially on dark or tanned skin. So, what are the most common causes of these annoying white spots on skin?
Tinea Versicolor which is also known by the name of pityriasis versicolor is a benign, or non-cancerous skin condition caused by a Malassezia which is a type of yeast. They are not contagious but are common on the abdomen, neck, upper arms and thigh. Over the counter anti-fungal medications like clotrimazole, terbinafine and miconazole can be used to treat the white blemishes successfully, but like all ailments if it doesn't respond within a couple of weeks, go to a doctor or a dermatologist.
Another common white spot disorder is known as Vitiligo and is caused through destruction of pigment producing skin cells. Idiopathic Guttate Hypomelanosis has spots that look like teardrops and is especially prevalent among women over 40 since it's generally associated with aging. The key factor in treatment is to protect the skin from the sun as well as using topical steroid creams, tretinoin cream, micro-dermabrasion, skin-grafts and other intrusive techniques as well as covering it up cosmetically with makeup.
What About Red Spots on Skin?
It's common for everyone to suffer an assortment of red dots on skin, red rashes and irritable red dry skin from time to time. Even babies get heat rash, diaper rash and teething rashes!
