Whitney Houston's Drug Addiction
Written by Bretton Holmes

whitney-houstons-drug-addictionsThe Grammy's are gone for another year, and while they succeeded in honoring their fallen comrade Whitney Houston, there is something this week that has disturbed me greatly that I believe needs to be addressed.

Ladies, Help Yourself, Help Your Man
Written by Bretton Holmes

ladies-help-yourself-help-your-manNo, I haven’t completely lost it, so before you chide me as a spy, please read on...this may be the most important 600 words you read all year.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with the nation’s leading expert on how men can become better men, a guy by the name of Wayne Levine. Levine is the author of Hold On To Your N.U.T.S. - The Relationship Manual For Men and he’s the director of BetterMen Coaching.

New Year New Skin
Written by Bretton Holmes

new-year-new-skinWell, Happy New Year everyone. I’m back from my brief sabbatical and let me tell you, it was brief. Entirely too short and too fast and my head is still spinning. I thought that with all the cooking I did, I’d get at least marginal benefit for the skin with all the steam I was generating, but I guess I didn’t cook enough. Turkey and pie does nothing but make you look like that guy from Total Recall, so I thought this week’s blog entry oughtta at least cover the topic of what the heck to do about your skin post-Turkey stress disorder.

A Pain in the Back
Written by Bretton Holmes

a-pain-in-the-backBack pain debilitates Americans to the tune of nearly 55 BILLION dollars each year and the cost outlay has insurance companies reeling...well, I would imagine does...

There is an 83 percent chance that if you are over 40 and you are reading this right now, you have already experienced a debilitating form of back pain. And even though I can only stand Las Vegas for about 24 hours on a good day, these are odds I would gladly take with me the next time I happen to be there. At this very moment, a large percentage of the 131.5 million people affected by back pain are actively searching for something to help them relieve their back pain.

Contraceptives: What You Need to Know
Written by Bretton Holmes

contraceptives-what-you-need-to-knowI was talking with one of my lady friends the other day and she suggested that I might want to explore this topic of birth control and contraceptives. ‘There’s a lot of misinformation out there about it and women are faced with a lot of choices that might at first glance seem viable, but on further research, may not be.’

Communication and the Holidays- It's All Relative
Written by Bretton Holmes

communication-and-the-holidays-its-all-relativeAlright, so we’re just shy of about a week away from the middle of the ‘holiday season’ and I thought in keeping with last week’s blog about how to keep from looking like St. Nick by...well, by the time she shows up, we should delve into a little primer for next week, when many of you will be either visiting relatives or being visited upon by relatives.  Either way, the stress we experience during this time of year is all RELATIVE... :-)

How to Avoid the Holiday Bulge
Written by Bretton Holmes

how-to-avoid-the-holiday-bulgeIn my quest to be timely and inherently beneficial to you my most loyal readership :-) I thought this week we would delve into that most enjoyed and gluttonous of times, the holidays. This time of year is oft marked by excesses in one form or another, so in the interest of giving you a bit of a head start on what might otherwise be a laundry list for your New Year’s Resolution, we’re gonna talk about how to avoid a food coma this holiday season.

Be Your Own Fountain of Youth
Written by Bretton Holmes

be-your-own-fountain-of-youthYou’re getting older right? Just in the time it takes you to zip through this blog entry, you’ve aged a little more.... If that’s what you believe, I’m here to tell you that you are absolutely mistaken...

‘Aging in its simplest terms’ explains Dr. Janet Zand, health expert and best-selling author of several of the most valuable books on nutrition you will find anywhere, ‘is a state of mind first and foremost. We have a choice as to whether that aging is positive or negative based on how we approach the concept and what it means.’

Sisterhood of the Grape and Grain
Written by Bretton Holmes

sisterhood-of-the-grape-and-grainNow that we’re heading into the holiday season (I still don’t have a viable costume for Halloween), I thought it might be a good time to touch on a topic that has historically been one of those very touchy ones for women. Alcohol. There was a time in the not-too -distant past when the term alcoholism held an enormous stigma for women. Polite ladies in society simply did not do it, and if they did, they were branded with that awful ‘S’ word, whether true or not. Thankfully, things have changed to a large degree from the pioneering work done by women like Betty Ford who had no other choice but to quit drinking. Rather than get into a ‘are you an alcoholic?’ discussion in this week’s blog, I thought I’d take the far simpler approach and just extol the hazards to your health as a woman from alcohol.

Fertility and Your Stress Level
Written by Bretton Holmes

infertility-and-your-stress-levelIt is generally well known that stress can have a negative impact on a couple’s chances of conception, even under the best of circumstances. When those circumstances include the difficulty of getting pregnant, well, it can make the stress levels rise, which only adds to the difficult circumstances, which thereby, has an ever increasing negative impact on fertility. After a while if not addressed, the couple can feel like a hamster in a wheel.

Create an At-Home Spa
Written by Bretton Holmes

founding-editor-in-chief-of-organic-spa-magazineFor many women, the idea of going to a spa for relaxation is thought of as the most sublime and expensive form of extravagance. These sojourns are the realm of the wealthy and the privileged and aren’t viewed as potentially feasible when it comes to the old bank account. Sure, you could go drop hundreds of dollars on a massage and a facial and a manicure and a pedicure, but then where is Little Johnny’s shoe money going to come from? No one would likely blame the busiest Mom for taking some time to herself at the ritziest spa one could imagine, but in these dog days of the economy we seem to be in the midst of, we've got to get more creative with not only our time but how we spend that time, both physically and emotionally.

Radical Self-Care, A Radical Concept?
Written by Bretton Holmes

radical-self-care-a-radical-conceptSo the kids are at school. You’ve got a bit of time during the day to catch up on your to-do list from summer, but you find you’re faced with a problem: the anxious realization that the holidays are about to hit.

What may be helpful is to take care of yourself first, rather than focusing on the myriad of needs of others first. Now, I know what you’re thinking - ‘Bretton, you’re saying ‘my only job is to take care of my family and everything else takes a proverbial seat in the rear of the minivan.’ Well, you certainly get my nomination for Sainthood - a Sainthood which may arrive more quickly if you keep your stress level up!

Repair Your Summer Skin Damage

So now that we’re into Fall, it means a new season, which means new weather. It was a real scorcher this summer from all the evidence I see, not the least of which is that women are waking up, looking in the mirror and wondering how in the world their skin survived.

Written by Bretton Holmes

Bretton-Holmess-BiographyHi there!

My name is Bretton Holmes. In the ten years I’ve been a media relations expert specializing in the medical, healthcare, wellness, and beauty fields, I’ve found that it becomes increasingly difficult to sift through the fodder of what people need to know when it comes to living their lives as effectively as possible. Finding the best experts the world has to offer can be challenging for anyone, even more so for the layperson.
