Try this all-purpose oil and your hair and skin will thank you!
I first encountered coconut oil while visiting relatives in India when I was a kid. My aunts would apply it as a conditioning treatment or a styling product to their hair. The smell was a bit overwhelming, but on the plus side, every hair strand stayed in place.
Well, they were onto something because it turns out, coconut oil is rich in Vitamin E, which helps protect the hair and skin.
Fast forward a decade or two when I recently came across this multi-purpose oil while searching for a moisturizer. Review after review raved about the softening and healing qualities of coconut oil. Read on for the inside scoop on this miracle oil.
A Treat for Your Hair
I use coconut oil as a conditioning treatment about twice a week and apply it from the midway of the hair shaft to the ends. I really saturate the ends with the oil because they dry out due to blow-drying and curling. Leave the oil in for about 20 minutes and then shampoo and condition like you normally would. You may also find that you need a touch less conditioner. Believe me when I say that you’ll see a noticeable difference in your hair texture. More importantly, the softness and shine is amazing. Ladies with thicker or coarser hair can also use it as a post-shower conditioning treatment before styling.
Skin that’s Oh-So-Soft
My new can’t-go-without-it post-shower ritual includes applying coconut oil as a body moisturizer. I work out in the evenings and have to shower at night, which means my moisturizer has to keep my skin hydrated through the night and into the next evening. I tried drugstore and high-end brands, but my skin was always dry in the morning- that is, until I discovered coconut oil. It is very rich, so you don’t need to use a lot. The coconut oil takes some time to fully absorb into your skin, which means it’s better to wear pajama pants or a long nightgown to make sure the oil doesn’t get on your bed sheets or the couch. Another awesome benefit? It is helping to lighten the stubborn dark patches on my elbows and knees. One of my coworkers also uses the oil on her face, which can be helpful if you have dry skin. I think it’s a bit too much for oily skin. (If you have oily skin and are looking for a facial oil, Pure Argan Oil is the best).
Good for Your Insides, Too
Coconut oil also packs a powerful nutritional punch. You can use it while cooking pasta sauce, soups, smoothies and more. One tablespoon of the stuff can help strengthen your immune system, boost your metabolism and energy and even keep the weight off. The real question is – what are you waiting for?
Until next time, stay gorgeous!
