What should you wear - or not wear - to your corporate Christmas party?
The holiday season is in full swing. The outerwear’s getting warmer, the lipstick is getting bolder and sparkle is back in. It’s one of the most fun times of year when it comes to your wardrobe. And with so many parties to go to, girl, you’ve got so many opportunities to show off!
But perhaps the holiday party that requires the most strategy when it comes to your style is your work party. Whether your job offers a casual, during-lunch work party or a drunken evening that ends with Brenda the secretary singing on top of the piano, there’s definitely some strategy involved in deciding what to wear. (Or, better yet, what NOT to wear!)
Here are some tips for finding just the right balance between of fun, festive, and appropriate for your company Christmas party.
- Make it Festive
Holiday parties are supposed to be fun – so have fun! Try to branch out from your normal work attire. Bold, seasonal colors (like deep red and bright green) are in this year, so try to find one piece that stands out; whether it be a bold, bright sweater or a big, sparkly statement necklace to spice up your normal “business casual.” Add a small, chic clutch instead of your normal clunky work briefcase to take it to the next level. Just don’t show up in your Monday through Friday khakis and bore everyone to tears. Show that you know how to have fun, too!
- Don’t Go Too Casual
This is where balance comes in. Yes, you want to have fun, but you’re still going to be surrounded by co-workers and managers whose respect you want to keep. To a degree, your outfit will depend on both the venue and the time of day the party is held. If it’s during the day and just an in-office affair, use your accessories to dress it up – glittery earrings or even a bold eye shadow that you normally reserve for weekends. If the party is an after-hours, off-site event, you can get more formal. A dress or a skirt with classy tights and a sexy heel is perfect.
- Keep it PG
Before you leave for the party, take a look in the mirror. Imagine the crankiest, meanest, creepiest dude at your company. Do you want him to see you like this? Do you want your next boss to see you like this? If the answer to either of those questions is no, then change it up, girl! Just like too much wine is never a good idea, too much cleavage or too much leg aren’t either. Have fun, dress it up, be festive, but keep your self-respect and remember that 364 days out of the year, you expect your colleagues to respect you, too. Don’t give them a reason not to. (Also, whatever you leave the house in should stay ON you at all night, ladies.)
Whether it’s a white elephant gift exchange in the lunch room or an open bar all-nighter at a downtown hotel, have fun with your company party wardrobe. Be bold, be festive, and be respectful. You’re going to look great!
Just please, please, whatever you do, don’t wear a jingle bell necklace. (Brenda the secretary probably has that covered.)
