It’s been over 24 hours since news broke that Zayn Malik was leaving One Direction, the band that he has been a part of for over five years. After hours of continued silence, Malik finally talked about his decision to The Sun.
We can sleep better knowing that rumors of Malik leaving One Direction due to inner bandmate conflict were false. He left for his own personal reasons, which mostly have to do with honesty to his fans.
“I did try to do something that I wasn’t happy doing for a while, for the sake of maybe other people’s happiness – and that was mainly the fans,” Malik said in his interview. “And I only ever tried to do it for the fans, and it was only ever for them. And basically, I’m only upset I feel like I may have let them down in some sort of way. That’s the main thing that I don’t want to happen. It’s not that I’ve turned my back on them or anything, it’s just that I just can’t do that anymore because it’s not real to me.”
This 22-year-old admits that although the past few days have been crazy, he has never felt more in control of his life.
“I feel like I’m doing what’s right, and right by myself and right by the boys, so I feel good,” Malik said. Malik says that for the time being he wants to relax and write, but hopes to continue solo music work in the future.
Does this boy-band break up sound familiar? The most recent shocker for boy-band solo artists would be Nick Jonas, who confessed to E! News that his decision to go solo was a hard conversation to have with his brothers. The former Jonas Brothers star said the break up was completely on his side, leaving the band in shambles.
“You know,” Nick said in an interview with E! News, “There’s never an easy time to make a decision like that. I commend [Malik] for doing what he feels is right for him and you got to stay true to yourself.”
Unlike the Jonas Brothers, One Direction plans to continue performing their group as a quartet. However, the shock of it all was hard for many of the bandmates, including Harry Styles who reportedly wept on stage during his performance in Jakarta.
Yet the remaining members of One Direction are still going strong.
“I guess what I’m really trying to say is it’s far from over,” tweeted Liam Payne, a member of One Direction. “When we very first became successful, we all agreed that One Direction had become much bigger than each individual member. That’s why I feel like right now it’s OK to be sad and upset, but I do ask everyone who is a fan of us to please keep your faith in us. I’m sure there’s a lot more to come.”
We hope so, Liam. We hope so.
